Foundation Fridays: Spotlighting Tech Sassy Girlz in Orlando

The Florida-based STEM education organization has impacted the lives of thousands of young women since 2012.

Tech Sassy Girlz has spent the last 12 years inspiring young women in STEM.

In the heart of Orlando, Florida, an inspiring movement is underway to reshape the narrative of STEM education for young girls. Tech Sassy Girlz, founded by Dr. Laine Powell, stands as a beacon of empowerment in the male-dominated world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Founded in 2012, Tech Sassy Girlz is making waves in the STEM world, empowering young girls from grades 6 to 12. The nonprofit organization goes beyond filling the gender gap. It cultivates a generation of confident, skilled and ambitious young women ready to conquer the challenges of the STEM world.

The origin of ‘Tech Sassy Girlz’

The roots of Tech Sassy Girlz can be traced back to Powell’s personal experiences. Her late brother, Israel, played a crucial role in sparking her interest in computing by building her first computer. This early exposure left a lasting impression, driving Powell to address the gender imbalance she witnessed later in her academic and professional journey.

“I am proud to say that Tech Sassy Girlz has served over 3,000 girls,” Powell said, also sharing that only 27% of women are currently represented in computing fields, with even lower percentages for women of color.

Powell recognized the importance of infusing a sense of personality and individuality into the organization’s identity, breaking away from traditional and often stereotypical representations of women in STEM.

“The term ‘Sassy’ reflects our commitment to nurturing confident, bold and assertive young women who fearlessly navigate the world of technology,” Powell said.  “The name itself embodies the essence of our mission – empowering girls to embrace their uniqueness while conquering the challenges and opportunities presented in the dynamic landscape of STEM.”

Bridging the gender gap

Interest in Tech Sassy Girlz and its mission continues to grow throughout Florida.

Tech Sassy Girlz has developed two key programs to inspire and educate young girls in STEM: Tech Sassy Girls Code and Pearls in Tech, both designed to provide hands-on experience and mentorship opportunities. They are offered free of charge.

“Through grants and corporate sponsorships, we secure the necessary support to provide laptops, meals, transportation and any required equipment or supplies,” Powell said.

One distinctive feature of the Pearls in Tech program — exclusive to high school-aged students — is the $1,200 stipend awarded upon program milestone completion to provide financial support to participants.

Tech Sassy Girlz also encourages near-peer mentoring, enabling students to seek assistance from their peers when faced with challenges. Powell proudly reveals that Tech Sassy Girlz alumni often return to the program as mentors, presenters, and workshop leaders. This cyclical empowerment, where former participants give back to the community, highlights the lasting impact of Tech Sassy Girlz on its participants.

A bright future on the horizon

Powell mentions the organization’s grassroots marketing efforts, including collaborating with local schools, districts, and libraries. Through word-of-mouth, social media presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, and partnerships with Orange County Public Schools, Tech Sassy Girlz has successfully reached and impacted over a thousand students annually.

To accommodate the increasing interest, the organization split its annual Tech Sassy Girlz conference in partnership with the University of Central Florida into two events: one for middle school students in April and another for high school students during the fall. The annual conference began with 40 students in 2012. Now, it attracts over 700 participants.

Tech Sassy Girlz continues to inspire and empower the next generation of female STEM leaders. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, the organization’s commitment to breaking barriers and fostering inclusivity serves as a beacon of hope for girls aspiring to make their mark in the dynamic world of STEM.

Powell emphasizes the importance of creativity and exploration in the STEM space, urging young girls to embrace their boldness, confidence, and sassiness.

“Start within your local community, utilizing resources available at libraries and seeking support from parents and mentors,” Powell said.
