Legendary Moments in NBA History: Wilt Chamberlain scores 73 points with 36 rebounds

NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain is arguably best-known for scoring an NBA-record 100 points on March 2, 1962.

However, Chamberlain’s performance two months earlier against the Chicago Packers was almost more impressive than scoring 100.

On Jan. 13, 1962, Chamberlain erupted for 73 points (on 29-for-48 shooting) and 36 rebounds in the Warriors’ win. When Chamberlain scored 100, he pulled down only 25 boards.

The athletic, 7-foot-1 center finished the 1961-62 season with some of the best NBA season averages of all-time — 50.6 points, 25.7 rebounds and 48.5 minutes per game. Despite his historic season, Chamberlain didn’t take home the 1962 NBA MVP award. Instead, that honor went to Boston Celtics star Bill Russell, who won three straight NBA MVP awards from 1961-63.
